On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, a California judge granted certification of a class of hourly restaurant employees who allege improper wage and hour practices at Boston Market Corporation restaurant locations in California. Boston Market Corporation is a fast casual restaurant chain specializing in rotisserie chicken meals. During the relevant time period, Boston Market Corporation operated 32 restaurants in California and currently operates 24 restaurants in the Golden State.
In its order, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kenneth R. Freeman certified a class of more than 4,000 hourly paid employees who contend Boston Market Corporation failed to provide meal breaks and rest breaks and failed to reimburse employees for uniform expenses and the cost of laundering uniforms in violation of the California Labor Code and the applicable Industrial Welfare Commission Wage Order. The court certified plaintiffs Joel Reyes and Fawn Singleton’s meal break subclass, rest break subclass (for the time period prior to July 31, 2019), uniform reimbursement subclass, and uniform laundering subclass.
